Strategizing Activities and Practices (SAP) is an Interest Group at the Academy of Management (AoM) devoted to fostering research into the practice of strategy. Members of this interest group understand strategy as something that people in organizations do rather than something that firms in their markets have. Such an interest in the doing of strategy directs our attention to the myriad day-to-day activities on the micro-level that make up strategy in practice. Yet, at the same time it calls for an appreciation of the role of the macro-level institutions in shaping these strategizing activities: Strategists are not acting in isolation but are drawing upon the regular, socially defined modes of acting that arise from the plural social institutions to which they belong. For more information on this approach please visit the about us section.
While SAP has a very distinctive research domain, it also shares many interests with other Divisions – in particular BPS, ODC, OMT and RMD. In order to facilitate an exchange of ideas we cultivate strong links with those Divisions. This includes the establishment of explicit liaison officers and the coordination of our conference programs.
In contrast to older Divisions with firmly established structures and procedures, Strategizing Activities and Practice provides the unique opportunity for every single member to significantly shape the research community and the research agenda. We hope that you value this opportunity. There are many ways in which you can get involved. This website is a good starting point, but there are many other possibilities to connect to the community such as the SAP listserv, AoM Connect or our annual Business Meeting at the Academy. If you have any questions or suggestions you are also always welcome to contact me or any other Steering Committee member personally.
Thank you for being part of the SAP Interest Group!
