The primary mission of LSU's PhD in business administration with a major in management is to develop academics who are capable of conducting and publishing scholarly research in the broad domain of management and who are qualified to instruct in a university environment.

The department's environment and culture are highly research oriented. Research of the department's faculty include a broad range of areas of management and organizational research, spanning research on Corporate Governance, Executive Compensation and Succession, Gender & Diversity, Innovation Management, International Management, Leadership, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Justice & Ethics, Organization Theory, Personality and Individual Differences, Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods, Work Groups & Teams, and Strategic Management.

Admitted students are typically offered graduate assistantships for up to five years of PhD studies that include a competitive financial stipend and a tuition waiver as well as financial support for attending conferences and professional development. In addition, graduate assistantships provide PhD students with opportunities to gain the experience necessary for honing research and teaching skills by closely working with research faculty in their areas of interest.
