Developing an Engaged Scholarship Research Project

The objective of this workshop is to develop a good research idea that you would submit to a doctoral dissertation committee, a research funding body or beyond. A good research proposal is defined as one that addresses five central questions in the Engaged Scholarship "Diamond Model":
(1) formulating the research problem and question;
(2) developing alternative theories to address the research problem;
(3) designing the research to compare alternative theories;
(4) communicating and using the research findings; and
(5) being reflexive in knowing who the research is for.
Make the most of this workshop by doing some simple preparatory work beforehand:
a) please read Chapter 1 of Engaged Scholarship (Van de Ven 2007);
b) view two short videos: one and two; and
c) work through the questions in the worksheet.

About the speaker
Andrew H. Van de Ven is Professor Emeritus in the Carlson School of the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1972, and taught at Kent State University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania before that. At the Carlson School he teaches courses on managing organizational change and innovation and on engaged scholarship research methods.
Van de Ven's books and journal articles over the years have dealt with the Nominal Group Technique, organization design and assessment, inter-organizational relationships, organizational innovation and change, and engaged scholarship research methods. He is co-author of 15 books, including: The Innovation Journey (1999, 2008), Organization Change and Innovation Processes (2000), Engaged Scholarship (2007), and the Oxford Handbook of Organizational Change and Innovation (1st ed. 2004; 2nd ed. 2021, all published by Oxford Univ. Press.
During 2000-2001 Van de Ven was President of the Academy of Management, and he was founding editor of Academy of Management Discoveries (2012-2017). He also served on the Board of Directors of Ascension Health System from 2010 – 2014, the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the U.S. He received the Distinguished Career Service Award from the Academy of Management in 2020.
