Discourse-Based Inquiry: Rhetorical, Narrative, and Dialogic Research Design in Multiple disciplines

Academy of Management, Professional Development Workshop

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a multidisciplinary PDW on Discourse-Based Inquiry. This PDW serves academics and practitioners who are interested in the role of discourse, rhetoric, narrative, dialogue, and other linguistic mechanisms in organizational change, communication, leadership, strategy, power, and institutional processes.

Researchers from management, communications, and linguistics will provide conceptual clarity and bridging between various streams of discursive approaches. Topics include the challenges of using discourse methods, roadmaps for designing discourse-based inquiry, and opportunities for combining discourse analysis with quantitative language processing techniques. Distinguished scholars and the Chief Editors of Management Communication Quarterly and Human Relations will address common concerns from reviewers and ways to address them.

The PDW includes 3 Parts. In Part 1, several scholars will present how they use discursive approaches in their empirical research. Part 2 is a moderated panel discussion. In Part 3, participants join presenters and panelists in breakout groups to ask questions and seek feedback on their research ideas. Emphasis will be placed on providing hands-on guidance on how to design research programs that explicitly employ discourse methods.
