This is a funded three year PhD Scholarship to work with Prof John Wilson (eminent business historian), Prof David Jones (eminent social theorist) and Dr Alistair Bowden (researcher of time and space, and a lover of fine wine), at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK (Timed Higher Education University of the Year 2022; Daily Mail Research University of the Year and Modern University of the Year 2023).
Champagne! A word loaded with meaning and emotion. A region in North West France, where French royalty were crowned and many wars have been fought. More popularly a wine, in an unusual glass (flute, coupe, or tulip); bubbling, expensive, to mark a special occasion; liquid high spirits poured from a bottle opened with an attention grabbling pop!
But how has the wine and the place, changed through time?
Categories – social constructions that differentiate among entities, such as products, people, and organizations (David et al., 2023, p. 6) – have attracted much attention, since the publication of a JMS Point-Counterpoint (Durand & Paolella, 2019; Glynn & Navis, 2019; Kennedy & Fiss, 2019). In recent years, special issues in Organization Studies (Delmestri et al 2020) and Strategic Organization (David et al 2023) have emphasised the dynamic nature of categories and also their embeddedness in place. However, as with much organization research, category research tends to be atemporal.
This study will focus on categories through time, focusing on evolution and, more significantly, on revolution.
