  • 2.  Interpersonal Dynamics in Strategic Leadership: Five Perspectives (AoM Panel Symposium)

    Posted 07-23-2017 07:45
    Dear Colleague,

If you are interested in strategic leadership or TMTs, we would like to draw your attention to the following panel symposium in Atlanta. It's open to everyone. Please consider joining us on Tuesday.

Interpersonal Dynamics in Strategic Leadership: Five Perspectives
    Sponsors: BPS, SAP, OMT
    Time: Tuesday, Aug 8 2017 1:15PM - 2:45PM
Room: Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Regency Ballroom V

Chair: David Seidl, U. of Zurich
    Presenter: Ann Langley, HEC Montréal
Presenter: Shenghui Ma, U. of Zurich
Presenter: Richard Priem, Texas Christian U.
Presenter: Matthew Semadeni, Arizona State U.
    Presenter: Zeki Simsek, Clemson U.
Discussant: Philip Bromiley, U. of California, Irvine

A fundamental question in upper echelons research is how strategic decisions are made at the apex of the organization. While earlier studies typically focused on linking characteristics of CEOs and TMTs with strategic outcomes, recent research has began to explore the interpersonal dynamics in strategic decision making by examining closely the actors who are actually involved and how they actually interact. This research has led to five emerging perspectives: CEO-TMT interface, CEO-adviser relations, strategic leadership constellation, TMT microdynamics, and "alternate configurations". Each perspective has a somewhat different understanding of the decision process and focuses on particular sets of actors and their interactions. We have now reached a stage where harnessing and harvesting such diversity requires dialogue. This symposium gathers together leading experts who represent these different perspectives. Collectively, panelists and audience will develop a dialogue with a view to enriching our understanding of the interactive dynamics of strategy actors at the apex of the organization and to exploring possibilities of a joint research agenda.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Atlanta.

    Your organizers,

    Shenghui Ma & David Seidl

  • 3.  SMS panel "Researching Different Types of Strategists: Insights, Challenges, and Future Directions"

    Dear Colleague,

If you will be attending the SMS conference in Houston, we would like to draw your attention to the following panel session. Please consider joining us on Monday.

    ------
Researching Different Types of Strategists: Insights, Challenges, and Future Directions
    Monday, Oct 30th, 14:00-15:15, Room 335B

    Panelists:
Steven Floyd, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Paul Hunter, CEO, Strategic Management Institute
Tomi Laamanen, University of St. Gallen
    Terry McNulty, University of Liverpool
    Sucheta Nadkarni, University of Cambridge

Human actors are a fundamental element in strategy making. To understand how strategies emerge, develop, and change, scholars have paid significant attention to strategists-the human actors involved in the strategy process. Studies have examined different types of strategists, such as top managers, boards of directors, and middle managers, focusing on the cognitive, behavioral, and social processes through which they influence strategy process and outcomes. We have now reached a stage where a comprehensive understanding of strategists requires dialogue. This panel gathers together leading scholars who have studied these different strategists as well as an experienced strategy practitioner. Panelists and audience will develop a dialogue with a view to enriching our understanding of the different types of strategists and to exploring directions for future research.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Houston.

    Your panel organizers,

    Shenghui Ma & Sotirios Paroutis
