Recent years have seen an intensifying dialogue between institutional theorists and practice scholars to advance key debates in their respective fields. In light of such conversations, this panel PDW convenes prominent institutional and practice scholars to take stock of the nascent "practice-driven institutionalism" (Smets, Aristidou, & Whittington, 2017), explore untapped complementarities, and develop a research agenda for the future. Specifically, it aims to systematize some of the current thinking around a practice-driven institutionalism and to highlight its potential to more truthfully reflect the practice-theoretical heritage of organizational institutionalism in its big debates of the moment. In the spirit of professional development we highlight opportunities for advancing current debates, such as institutional logics, hybridity, complexity and change and develop an agenda for future research that more actively acknowledges the role of practitioners and practice in institutional dynamics.

The PDW will consist of three parts:

    (1) Panelist presentations on how a stronger practice perspective can enhance current institutional debates,

    (2) Facilitated round-tables with panelists for "hands on" discussions of participants' current and future projects,

    (3) Comments from discussants Roger Friedland and Theodore Schatzki on the current use and future potential of their seminal works in conceiving a more practice-driven institutionalism.

All are welcome to attend. No pre-registration required.
