Dear Colleagues (w/ apologies for any cross-posting):

We would like to invite you to the following PDW @ AOM Philadelphia:

Opportunities for Integrating Discourse Analysis into Strategy Research

    Saturday August 2, 2013: 8:00-11:00 AM
Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel Independence B

    Organizers:
Stine Grodal (Boston University) and Winston Kwon (Lancaster)

    Keynote:  William Ocasio (Northwestern University)
Eero Vaara (Hanken School of Economics)

    Facilitators:

Julia Balogun (Uni. of Bath):  Sensemaking & narratives
    Peer Fiss (UNC) Framing
David Grant (Uni. of Sydney):   Discourse & change
    Steven Kahl (Dartmouth):  Linguistic networks
Mike Pfarrer (Georgia):  Content analysis & social evaluations
Fernando Suarez (Boston Uni):  Labels & categories
William Ocasio (Northwestern):  Vocabularies & specialized languages
Eero Vaara (Hanken):   Critical discourse analysis

Building on the theme of this year's AOM – "The Power of Words" – we explore how the use of discourse analytic methods can bring new perspectives and insights to traditional strategy research. We suggest that greater attention to language and words has the potential to help researchers develop methodological innovations that can form the basis for new strategy research agendas.

The goal of this PDW is both for participants to be introduced to different viewpoints on how discourse and strategy intersect, and to provide participants with an opportunity to engage in a variety of small-group discussions with prominent strategy scholars currently involved in cutting-edge discourse analysis. Participants will gain familiarity with a variety of discourse-analytic methods, to enable them to view existing strategy conversations with fresh perspectives.

We look forward to seeing you at Philadelphia!

    Stine Grodal and Winston Kwon
