Strategy formation lies at the heart of strategic management. While
different theoretical lenses identify strategy formation differently,
management scholars have always been interested in how strategies are
formed. Recent developments in organization theory and strategic
management – such as research on the emergence of new organizational
forms, use of strategic initiatives in strategy implementation, the
strategy as practice perspective and the arrival of
multi-level/multi-period research designs – require us to rethink what
strategy formation means and how to study it. As a starting point, we
need to understand what we know from prior research about strategy
formation. There is a need to focus on how different streams of research
approach the topic, their points of convergence and divergence and
possible ways of learning and collaboration across streams. We intend to
organize a PDW that brings in scholars from a variety of theoretical
perspectives, including upper echelons, organizational design,
intraorganizational ecology, strategy as practice, and strategic
decision making and change. Our goal will be to inform Academy members
on how these streams of research approach strategy formation and how
they can learn and collaborate with one another in future research.
